Which lookback period should I select?
If your teen is new to social media or only uses Snapchat, then zero days is logical because there isn’t existing content to analyze. If your teen is an infrequent poster and hasn’t been on social media for a long time, then a week could be sufficient as a data starting point. For teens with lots of regular posts or a long history on social media, all-time is the recommended selection to capture the full history of content.
Does it matter if my teen is on Snapchat, Instagram or TikTok and I am not?
Absolutely not! A factor in the founding of Percepta Social was because of the disinterest in getting into each of the platforms simply to see what is being posted.
Can a second guardian/parent have access?
The app was designed so that an unlimited number of guardians can be added to your profile at no additional cost. Additional parents or guardians from spouses to grandparents are welcome. The parent that performed the initial enrollment can add more co-parents by finding the the Invite Co-parent button on the main page.
How is data protected?
In short, we use a popular and secure online database provider and do not sell customer data to third-parties. For more details about our data protection and privacy, please review the Privacy Policy and Usage Terms.
Can I use Percepta Social if my state has a social media ban, age verification or feature restriction (i.e. infinite scroll disallowed)?
Yes, but it may not be worthwhile. Percepta Social is not the gate keeper age related social media bans or age verification. If you live in a state where the minimum age is 14, but you see our advertising at ages 13-17, you’d best be served by waiting for a year since your teen cannot have an account and there will not be any content for us to analyze. The Percepta Social app will not prevent you from installing it or creating a subscription even if your teen is prohibited from having social media account(s).
Is the app available on Android and Apple?
Yes! All screen sizes are supported but optimization is for mobile.
Do you have a desktop app or website login?
We do not have either a website login or a desktop version at this time.
What is sentiment analysis?
In short, the process determines if text, images, and video portray a positive, neutral, or negative tone. In the case of Percepta, the next step then applies specific analysis criteria targeting teenagers to calculate a score in an easy to understand metric, 1 to 100.
What if I don’t agree with the score my teen received?
It’s quite possible that will be the case. There are lots of variables that make what Percepta Social is trying to accomplish extremely difficult. Here are some considerations: 1) each individual has their own ideas about positive and negative content 2) English is a nuanced language 3) Teens are constantly inventing new words (looking at you unalived) 4) The AI engine used to analyze the content is continually changing, learning and improving 5) Sarcasm is one of the hardest concepts to get right. As of our product launch, there is no recourse for examining the score for each post nor modifying the scores.
How can I monitor my teen’s direct messages or text messages?
You will need to find a different app for that. Our goal is to create awareness of public persona, not to monitor or block teen users.
Which scores are good and when should I worry?
The scoring system has an overall positive and negative weight at 70. For scores 70 or higher you can be confident in maintaining an online image which will not negatively impact the future prospects of your teen. If the score is in the 60s, some conversations between guardians and teens are suggested in regards to being more mindful about what is being shared and its tone. A perception redemption tour is a good place to start for scores in the 40-59 range. Anything lower than 39 you likely want to consider professional intervention.
Are my kids safe if they only use sites where the content automatically gets removed after a short period of time?
No. Once content is public it should be considered always public. Teens know how to take screenshots of what they see and share in private channels because they know the platform’s policy about retention and that the original poster can delete the content.
By the time each post is scored, isn’t it too late to prevent harm to my child?
Yes and No.
Yes because once content has been made public, it should be considered always public. Even if the content is deleted, there could be screenshots of it.
No because you always have the opportunity to provide feedback to your children about what is inappropriate or harmful to be posted online so they can do better in the future. Additionally, deleted content is unlikely to find its way to future employers or college admissions officers.
Why does the Last Updated date display so long ago?
The Last Updated date reflects when the platform last identified and analyzed content for your teen. It generally means your teen hasn’t posted anything new recently. In rare circumstances, it could indicate an issue with the platform’s technology. If you’re concerned, please reach out to us so we can check.
